UNEP Life Cycle Thinking
Life cycle thinking — the practice of assessing environmental impacts across a product’s entire lifetime, from extraction through end-of-life — remains a specialized domain even within sustainability circles. The UNEP Life Cycle Initiative recognized a critical gap: millions of decision-makers and professionals need foundational understanding of life cycle thinking to make informed choices, but accessible educational content was scarce. Inviable was engaged to develop a comprehensive, interactive e-learning module that could reach diverse audiences globally.
The challenge was substantial: translating a technically rigorous methodology into engaging, accessible pedagogy suitable for business professionals, policymakers, students, and practitioners without prior expertise. We developed an interactive learning architecture that combines short video narratives, case studies, interactive simulations, and self-assessment tools. The module moves from conceptual foundations through practical application, always grounding abstract principles in real-world scenarios.
Launched in 2017, the UNEP Life Cycle Thinking module remains a foundational resource within the circular economy and sustainability assessment communities, demonstrating how careful instructional design can democratize access to complex environmental knowledge.
